Weight Distribution and Hitches
What is Weight Distribution?
Weight distribution is properly adjusting the weight of a trailer from the rear of the towing vehicle back onto the axles of the trailer and the front of the towing vehicle. Without weight distribution the weight of the trailer pushes the rear of the tow vehicle down causing the weight to come off the front of the vehicle. Hazards associated with driving a trailer without weight distribution include loss of steering control, braking difficulties, and hitch dragging. Using a weight distribution hitch can eliminate problems with control, sway and sagging if used properly. Weight distribution is accomplished by using a weight distribution hitch.
Weight Distribution Hitches
There are several types of weight distribution hitches on the market. These hitches are made to go into a 2” rear receiver hitch on the tow vehicle. The hitch is designed to help distribute the weight evenly between the camper and the vehicle. The hitch in essence creates a bridge between the two putting the weight of the camper back on the front tires of the vehicle and the axle of the camper. These hitches have three major components: adjustable head, bars and brackets. These hitches are made by several different manufactures and come in different styles. There is a round bar style and a trunnion or square bar style. Most commonly you will see the trunnion style being used as pictured below.

What is an Equalizer Hitch?
The Equalizer Hitch is a brand of weight distribution hitch that also incorporates sway control. The difference between this hitch and a regular weight distribution hitch is in the brackets that mount to the camper frame. This hitch uses rigid brackets instead of chains to attach the bars to the frame and brackets. By using this type of bracket it eliminates the possibility of the bars swaying back and forth while towing. This hitch is much more expensive than a standard hitch but is well worth the money if sway is a concern or problem with your unit. The Equalizer hitch is pictured below.
Do I need a weight distribution hitch?
A weight distribution or Equalizer hitch can be used in any application of vehicle and camper. We usually recommend it with any SUV or Van and depending on the size of the trailer it is recommended on trucks as well.
